I MADE A 28 ON MY ACT BEAT THAT

as some of you might know i have a slighty chrush on a 9th grader that i have givin the nickname yellow 4 to and i might ask her to do somthing on the first day of school but i will probly chicken out between now and then

i have been asked to be in two bands today as the SINGER i know that most of you out there do not belive that i can sing at all and i happen to share that opinion but the members of the two bands dont and thats all that counts i think i am going to be in both bands just to have fun cause thats all i am looking to do anyway catch you guys in a few more mounths

I: Hi, we're back. This is radio [beep] and we're here with Conor Oberst of the band Bright Eyes. How are you doing, Conor?
C: Fine. Thanks. Just a little wet.
I: Oh, it's still comming down out there.
C: Yeah. I sorta had to run from the car.
I: Well, we are glad you made it. Now your new album "Fevers And Mirrors", tell us a little about the title. I notice there is a great deal of repeated imagery in the lyrics. Fevers, mirrors, scales, clocks. Could you discuss some of this?
C: Sure. Let's see. The fever is like-
I: First, first let me say this is a brilliant record and we're all really into here at the station. We get lots of calls. It's really good stuff.
C: Thanks. Thanks alot.
I: So, talk a little bit about some of the symbolism.
C: The fever?
I: Sure.
C: Well, the fever is basically whatever ailes yoy or presses you. It could be anything. In my case it's my neurosis; my... depression. But I don't wanna be limited to that. It's certainly different for different people. It's whatever keeps you up at night.
I: I see.
C: And the, and the mirror is like, as you might've guessed, self-examination or reflection or whatever form. This could be vanity or self loathing. I know I'm-I'm.. guilty of borh.
I: That's interesting. uh, how 'bout the scale?
C: The scale is essentially our attempt to solve our problem quantitativly through logic or rationalization. In my opinion it's often fruitless, but.. always.. not-not always. And the clock and calendars [ don't know what word he said ] it's just.. time. Our little measurements. It's just like it's always chasing after us.
I: It is. It is. Uh, how 'bout this Arienette? How does she fit into all this?
C: I'd.. I'd prefer not to talk about it.... in case she's listening.
I: Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize she was a real person.
C: .. She's not...... I made her up.
I: Oh. So she's not real.
C: Just as real as.. you or I.
I: I don't think I understand.
C: Neither do I, but after I grow up I-I will-I mean alot... alot of things.. are really unclear for me right now.
I: That's interesting. ah, now you mentioned your depression.
C: ... No I didn't.
I: You're from Nebraska, right?
C: Yeah. So?
I: Now, let em know if I'm getting too personal, but there seems to be a pretty dark past somewhere back there. What was it like for you growing up?
C: dark. Not really.. uh.. Actually I had a great childhood. My parents were wonderful.. I went to a Catholic school. They have-they had money so it wa-... it was all.. easy. I basically.. had everything.. that I wanted.
I: So alot of the refrences about babies and bathtubs are not biographical?
C: Well I do have a brother who died in a bathtub.... drowned. Actually I have five brothers that died that way.
I: [Laughs].
C: No, I'm serious. My mother drowned one every year for five consecutive years. They were all named Padriac. So, that's-they all got one song [ referring to "Padriac My Prince" ].
I: Hm.
C: It's kind of like walking out the door to discover it's a window.
I: But your music is certainly very personal.
C: Of course. I put alot of myself into what I do. But, it's like, being an author you have to like free yourself to use symbolisim and alogory to reach your goal. And a part of that is passion. Empathy for other people and their-their situations. Some of what I sing comes form other people's experiences. And mine as well as my own. It shouldn't matter. The message is intended to universal..-
I: I see what you mean.
C: Can you make that sound stop, please? [ reffering to the weird and highly annoying 'we-ow'-type-twilight-sone-meets-techno-sound that's been playing since the end of the song. ]
I: Yes. [Sound stops.] And your goal?
C: ... I don't know. Uh.. create feelings, I guess. A song. It never ends up the way you planned it though.
I: That's funny you would say that. Do you think that-
C: Do you ever hear things aren't really there?
I: I'm sorry, what?
C: .. nevermind. How long have you worked at this station?
I: Oh, just a few minutes. Uh, now you mentioned empathy for others. Would you say that that motivates you to make the music that you make?
C: No, not really. It's more a need for sympathy. [some very weird and faint voice is heard in the background.] I want people to feel sorry for me. I like to feel.. the burn of the audiences eyes on me when I'm whispering [whispers:] all my darkest secrets [stops] into the microphone. [Conor's angry voice in the background saying " and for a god damn f,yeah-fucking hospital." and you hear more fainter things as he continues speaking.] When I was a kid I used to carry this safety pin around with me, everywhere I went, in my pocket and When people weren't paying enough attention to me I would dig it into my arm until I started crying. Everyone would stop what they were doing and ask me what was the matter. [ noe during this you can begin to hear that the guy has been laughing through this whole speech.] I guess.. I guess I kinda [ don't know what he said there. ]
I: Really. You're telling me you're doing all this for attention?
C: No, I hate it when people look at me. I get nauseous. In fact, I could care less what people think about me. Do you feel [don't know what he asked.]
I: No. I'm feeling sick.
C: I really just want to be warm, yellow light that pours over everyone I love.
I: So.. uh you're going to play something for us now. Is this a new song?
C: Yeah. But I haven't written it yet. It's one I've been meaning to write called.. uh.. "A Song To Pass The Time".
I: Oh, that's a nice title.
C: Hmm. [Pause and cymbals are heard being played.] You should write your own scripts.
I: Yeah, I know.
